Parental controls on WhatsApp: how to set them up
WhatsApp has no built-in “parent mode” to read chats, and that is a good thing. What you can do: tighten their privacy settings, limit screen time from the phone, and see when they go online, without spying on conversations.
Privacy · Time limits · Presence · No chat reading
The steps, in order
Combine WhatsApp settings, phone controls and a conversation.
- In WhatsApp: Settings > Privacy > Groups, and choose "My contacts" so strangers cannot add them
- In WhatsApp: review who can see their photo, last seen and status
- On the phone: Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) to limit hours and apps
- To see when they go online: a presence alert, without reading their messages

FAQ
Does WhatsApp have its own parental controls?
Not for reading conversations. You can adjust privacy (groups, photo, last seen) and use the phone’s controls. WhatsApp may add new options, so check Settings > Privacy in your version.
Do Family Link or Screen Time show chats?
No. They limit time and apps, but do not show the content of WhatsApp conversations.
How can I see when my child goes online without reading chats?
With a presence alert like WA Tracker: it uses your own WhatsApp Web session and tells you when the number goes online or offline. It never reads messages and installs nothing on their phone.
Is it legal?
Monitoring presence of a minor in your care is different from reading their chats. Still, talk with your child and follow your country’s law. More on the legal page.
Responsible use: you track online/offline presence with YOUR WhatsApp session. No message reading, no account hacking. Follow the law. More in Legal.
